From Manual to Automated: Upgrading a Rainman Control Panel on Riviera 48 Flybridge (Australia)

The owner of a Riviera 48 Flybridge yacht started with an AC Rainman Portable watermaker. A few years later, he decided to upgrade by adding the manual control panel and autoflush system. This let him plumb the watermaker into the boat’s water system and run it while cruising, rather than just using it as a portable unit. He installed the control panel somewhere he could easily reach it for day-to-day operation.

When Rainman came out with their fully automated control panel, he wanted to make the system even easier to use. The upgrade also put Rainman’s claims to the test – they said the new automated panel would work with all their existing watermakers. The installation would show whether this backward compatibility actually worked in practice.

The new automated system turned out to have an added benefit. Since most of the control was now done through a small remote panel and phone app, the bigger control panel didn’t need to be in a prime location anymore.

He could move it down to the engine room, which freed up space in the more accessible parts of the boat while still keeping full control of the system through the wireless controls.
